When you choose AI, one of your two is locked in for you: fast.
AI does speed really well. It's trained on processes that already exist, so it gives you the average of your existing processes.
Now, is speed worth it? Maybe, and it highly depends on the quality of your existing processes. But it's not free, despite what a lot of people are trying to sell you. In most cases, deploying AI costs more than employing the people its positioned to replaced. (Read the "Why AI hasn’t replaced software engineers, and won’t" article below)
With AI, you're now choosing between:
- Cheap, leaving behind "good." Or
- Good, and it won't be cheap.

Data Science might be the reason the USA wins the World Cup
Okay, I know that might be statistically *unlikely* but it could come into play in the knockout rounds.
USA starting goalie, Matt Freese, studied economics at Harvard where he "conducted an elaborate study on penalty kicks." And no, he isn't willing to share his findings.
He created an expected goals model and has been known to study the shooting tendencies of the opposing team. A pre-match ritual that came in handy before his breakout moments against Costa Rica in last summer's Gold Cup.
"The match went to a penalty shootout. Freese saved the day by stopping three of the Costa Rican attempts."
Pretty impressive.

Ford [re]hires 350 'grey beard' engineers
“Mistakenly we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that that would produce a high-quality product.”
That's a direct quote from Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering.
Ford has began hiring 350 veteran engineers to fix the growing quality gaps created by “relying more and more on [AI and] automated quality systems.”
Many are rehires, and others are expert engineers from suppliers.
Leadership clarifies, they aren't removing AI, they are adding humans back in where it matters.
This is a great example of choosing fast and cheap (speed and dollars). It seems they realized good (quality) was actually more important.
